Well, apparently Russell Martin is the first free agent to abandon the Yankees, here https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/274323115230760960. No loyalty! Swisher will probably follow soon. After the loyalty from Cashman and the fans, this is how they repay it. Bye then! He will be sucking with the Pirates, while the Yankees take another trip to the playoffs.

sorry, but this shows a lack of knowledge of the situation. the yankees never even made russell an offer so when pitt came in with a good one, he took it. end of story.

Actually, according to MLBTradeRumors, they made him a two year offer worth between $12-$14 million. He could have followed Kuroda's example and took less, but guess money always wins out.

Some sources are faster than others. Buster Olney is the reliable analyst and journalist, but not always the first to a story. Still, I will be responsible and admit that I could be wrong. :)

Apparently Cashman told Russell that they wouldn't be able to match Pittsburgh's offer and not to wait on the Yankees. Now, obviously, he could have taken a discount but if the Yankees wanted him around so much, they could have made sure getting him back was a priority. They chose not to and you can't expect him to sit on his hands when he's one of the top free agent catchers on the market. It's not a loyalty issue whatsoever.
ring the bells that still can ring: NYY - Jose Kissy Facelinaerys on November 30th, 2012 03:38 pm (UTC)
I will be so sorry to lose Russell. At least he's being reunited with AJ?
