This Day in Yankees History:
1923 - Jake Ruppert took total possession of the Yankees when he paid T.L. Huston $1.5m for his share. Ten days later he bought each player two more sets of uniforms so they could wear a clean one every day - an unprecedented move in that era since players would often wear the same uniform for an entire series, especially on the road where laundry facilities for visiting players were limited.
1938 - Thornton Lee of the Chicago White Sox held the Yankees scoreless into the eighth inning, causing his mound opponent Spud Chandler to take matters into his own hands. He cranked a dinger in that frame - which would prove to be the only run scored by either side - and literally won himself the game.
2011 - In a rare good start, A.J. Burnett and the Yankees prevailed over the Mets at Yankee Stadium. After winning the night before [and knowing who would be pitching for us], the Mets fans in attendance were understandably excited when Burnett was reached for two runs in the opening inning. However, home runs by Russell Martin, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez off Chris Capuano restored order in an eventual 7-3 Yankees' victory.

If you read the name "Teixeira" in the 7-hole, yes, you did read it right.

This Day in Yankees History:
1948 - Joe DiMaggio hits for the cycle a second time, eleven years after the first. Not only did he fulfil the required elements, he threw in a bonus second home run and almost got another extra base hit; thwarted by a fine play by LF Ralph Hodgin.
2009 - Phil Hughes - filling in for the ineffective and injured Chien-Ming Wang - gets the win as the team hammer Baltimore 11-4 in the Bronx. The game's big bat belongs to Robinson Cano - three hits with a home run and two runs scored. And on issues of tradition surviving the move across the street - the sea of white uniforms in the stands confirms yet another has made it. It's Fleet Week and the Navy are in the house.

This Day in Yankees History:
1929 - Back-to-back homers by Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth for a 3-0 lead go for nought as a sudden downpour in the Bronx rains out the game in the fifth inning. The cloudburst prompts the more than 50,000 fans in attendance to run for cover, causing a stampede for the exit from the right-field bleachers that results in two deaths and a further 62 injuries.
(One newspaper - the International Herald Tribune (better known today as the Global edition of the NYT) - reported that Babe Rush rushed into the bleachers to try and stem the wild rush for shelter, pushing and fighting his way through the crowd - where he found a 17-year-old woman crushed beneath the trampling feet. He fought his way back onto the field with the woman in his arms... where she died before help arrived. Parts of this story have never been verified but it is no doubt part of Babe Ruth lore.
In another Babe story related to this day; many of the injured were part of a group of young boys who habitually clustered in a section of right field know as 'Ruthville', due to the fact that the Babe hit most of his home runs there, making a souvenir more likely. The Babe would visiit the injured boys in hospital a couple of days later, handing out autographed balls and promising to try to hit home runs for each of them.)

1946 - Mr. "The Straw That Stirs the Drink" October - also known as Reggie Jackson - was born.
1999 - Joe Torre arrives at Fenway Park to a warm welcome from the Boston faithful - returning to managerial action after treatment for prostate cancer. Unfortunately, the Yankees are beaten 6-3.
2001 - Tino Martinez went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI as the Yankees put the brakes on a eight-game winning streak, besting the Mariners, 14-10.

This Day in Yankees History:

1998 - Ah, David Wells... again. On 'Beanie Baby Day' in the Bronx, Wells would hold the Minnesota Twins at bay, though throwing just 11 of 27 first pitch strikes, to collect one of baseball's rarest accolades - a Perfect Game; the 15th in MLB history. (Quite a feat considering Wells' claim that he was hung-over from the previous night's festivities when he pitched.) His 27 outs in this game comprised part of a streak of 38 consecutive batters retired by Wells; an AL record he would hold until 2007.
It would also be the first of two Yankees' pitcher perfect games - David Cone would become the 16th pitcher on the perfect list just a year later - making the Yankees the only team that can boast consecutive perfectos.
2010 - In a game with glorious opening and closing innings, the Yankees prevailed over the Red Sox, 11-9, scoring nine of those runs in the first and last innings. They jumped on Dice-K in the first to the tune of five runs on RBIs by Alex Rodriguez (2), Robinson Cano, Francisco Cervelli and Marcus Thames. However Chan Ho Park - activated from the DL this very day by returning Ivan Nova to AAA- would relinquish the lead in the eighth, allowing back-to-back Red Sox homers. All would end well when Rodriguez and Thames reached Jonathan Papelbon for two-run blasts in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off victory.

For those with YES, the premiere of its latest Yankeeography airs tonight after the game. The subject - David Wells.

This Day in Yankees History:

1927 - Bob Meusel steals second, third and home in the third inning of a 6-2 victory over Detroit. (Editors Note: I'm pretty sure this was listed previously as happening on the 15th...)
1932 - The Yankees tie a record set in 1903 by Cleveland and repeated in 1906 by Boston when pitcher Lefty Gomez registers the Yankees' fourth consecutive shutout. Gomez tops off shutouts from Johnny Allen, George Pipgras and Red Ruffing with a 8-0 hammering of the Indians, issuing the fifth whitewashing the Yankees staff had handed out in its previous seven games.
2002 - David Wells dominates the Devil Rays on a beautiful Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, holding the Rays to just three hits in a 12-0 shutout thrashing. The Yankees offence was keyed by home runs by Jorge Posada, Nick Johnson and Bernie Williams.

This Day in Yankees History:

1935 - Lou Gehrig stole home 15 times in his career with each and every one being the front end of a double steal. The last of those steals helped the Yankees to a 4-0 victory over the Tigers on this day in 1935.
1941 - The Yankees would get a good pasting at the hands of the White Sox in a 13-1 loss. However, a very important single happened during this game - Joe DiMaggio would get just one hit in four attempts off of Ed Smith - the first hit of Joe D's unprecedented and never matched 56-game hitting streak.

This Day in Yankees History:

1967 - Mickey Mantle hits is 500th MLB career home run off Baltimore's Stu Miller to become the sixth member of the 500HR club in a 6-5 Yankees' victory.
1996 - With many of the crowd being in the house via tickets rewarded for sitting through a snowstorm on Opening Day, the Yankees played their first game of the '96 season against the Mariners - aka the '95 Playoff Loss Grudge Match. Doc Gooden kept the Mariners at bay, allowing not a single hit (but giving up six walks), whilst the Yankees bunched up a whole lot of singles to take a 2-0 lead, which would be the eventual scoreline. The 31,025 fans in attendence were tense as two free passes in the ninth allowed the Mariners some hope; but they soon lifted the roof off of Yankee Stadium when Derek Jeter reeled in a infield popup by Paul Sorrento to end the game.

In absent GDP/stupidly obtained injury news - I herniated a disc in my back on Saturday... bending down to tuck in the corner of my bed sheet. Proof that stupid shit doesn't just happen to ballplayers.

This Day in Yankees History:
1963 - Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris each hit a home run, the first time in the season that both hit a homer in the same game, contributing to a 11-1 drubbing of the Orioles.
1965 - Former Yankees' pitching coach and right-hand pitcher Mel Stottlemyre bests the Red Sox, 5-3, with Mickey Mantle reaching base four times - including a long blast over the wall.
2005 - The Yankees claim victory over a visiting Seattle team in a 13-9 game which can only be described as 'ugly'. The teams amass 30 hits and 4 official errors between them, though there are more misplays throughout the game. The Mariners take a 5-0 lead in the first inning, with Richie Sexton and Bob Boone homering off Carl Pavano. However the Mariners soon fall behind, 6-5, until the fourth inning, when Ichiro Suzuki and Raul Ibañez go deep, making it 9-6 and ending Pavano's day. The Yankees rally on Derek Jeter, Gary Sheffield, Tino Martinez and Jorge Posada home runs, and a three-run double by Hideki Matsui - overcoming the Mariners' attack.
